Reading climax volume without forcing a reversal

Climax volume is one of the few phrases that survives from older tape reading into a modern volume class. It is also the phrase most often turned into a button: high volume at an extreme, therefore reverse. We do not teach it that way.

What a climax is allowed to claim

A buying climax, as we mark it, is a session or a cluster of bars where effort is extreme, the range is wide, and the close fails to pay for that effort — or pays for it so completely that there is little left for the next session to do. It is a statement about residual demand, not a forecast of the next close.

On gilt futures this often looks like a late-morning surge into a known level, volume well above the same clock time for the previous fortnight, and a close that sits back inside the day’s range. The page does not say ‘short tomorrow’. It says the buyers who needed to act today may have acted.

The reversal habit we try to break

In reviews I still see journals where a single high-volume up-bar is labelled ‘climax’ because it is the tallest histogram of the week. Relative volume at that clock time might be ordinary. The bar might also have closed on its high, which is a poor exhibit for exhaustion.

Helen’s rule in the two-day workshop is blunt: you may not write ‘climax’ unless you can point to effort, location, and a failure of result. Two out of three is a busy bar. Busy bars happen on Mondays.

After the extreme

The useful work starts on the next session. Did volume dry up on a small test back into the climax range, or did participation return and push through? The first case is the market participation signal we actually care about. The second case is a reminder that climaxes can fail, which is why we do not sell them as a product.

If you are preparing for the September workshop, bring one page you currently call a climax and one page you are unsure about. The unsure page is usually the better teacher.
